Disturbing

My friend over at My Foil Hat had a disturbing post regarding her teenage son and his new part time job. As a homeschooling parent I understand that a homeschooled kid, especially one taking Dual Enrollment classes at the local community college, will have different "school hours" than a teenager who attends a public high school. We tend to forget that a lot of people do not understand homeschooling AT ALL! I guess these people think that we "start school" at 8 AM, take a bathroom break after a couple hours, then maybe a lunch break at noon to finish school by 2 PM. Wow. I doubt there are many homeschoolers who follow this schedule, ever! Unless maybe it was a total coincidence! Education can occur AT ANY TIME OF DAY! This may come as a total shock to many people out there but kids CAN LEARN even in the evening! (Yes I am being snarky here.)

Amy's son was given some paperwork (we are in Florida) to fill out as a home schooled kid as part of his usual work paperwork. Luckily his very smart mom READ it all! One of the things that she needed to sign had something to do with her son being a "Disconnected Youth." Huh? Turns out that this is part of a government program to help at-risk youth (defined as ages 16-24) and gives the employer some of our stimulus money. Nice.

MOM-dar

I was pretty upset as it appeared that the employer found a way to cash in on some stimulus money but Amy then added this post:
Thinking

She felt as though the person was simply ignorant about homeschooling someone who is 16 or over. I may not be as convinced, but then again, I can see conspiracy theories as plausible sometimes. :)

Please read the above posts as I am not sure, and neither was Amy, how this would affect her son later in life once labeled as a "disconnected youth." Parents, please read ALL paperwork even those you do NOT need to sign! Our kids are just that, kids, and are probably more trusting than is totally safe these days!
