Books

I am still slogging through Atlas Shrugged. Don't get me wrong, it is an important book and very timely to read NOW. But, OK, it is a long book and some of it is depressing. Which is the point. George Orwell's book 1984 was also depressing which was also the point! My daughter wants me to read something less depressing and then get back to the book but I want to read it through. Basically get it over with! I am a little less than halfway through.

As I mentioned earlier this is an important book that I place right up there with 1984, Brave New World and Animal Farm. It is actually pissing me off while reading it. Perhaps that is the sign of a good book!

The one aspect of the book that I find amusing now has to do with the, gasp, sex! Yes there is an unmarried lady who is an executive and, dare we say it?, has sex. And, hold onto your hats, she enjoys it! This is NOT graphic at all! As a matter of fact it is so tame now that many people would not think twice. What is interesting is that when it was written women were not supposed to like sex, only cheap floozies were supposed to. The author was trying to shock on many levels and this is one of them. Sadly, it is not shocking to the world of 2009. Frankly, the rest of the story is probably not shocking to the world of 2009. Many people would wonder what all the fuss was about. Sigh. People are sheep.
