Books Every American Should Read

OK I will admit it. I am a book geek. What can I say, I have a degree in English which can really open monetary doors let me tell ya! (uh huh, sure. A BS Degree in English plus a LOT of experience in something else will help)

Here is my list of "Important Books" in no particular order:

Brave New World - Aldus Huxley
This shows how the government controls people through........ pleasure. That's right, sex & drugs type of pleasure. Hmm do we see any correlations to today? Yeah, maybe.

1984 - George Orwell
This shows how the government controls people through fear, intimidation and pain. Which is worse you may ask? Control through fear or control through pleasure? Either way, of course, there is control.

Animal Farm - George Orwell
A great book to start kids out right. :) Basically how "all animals are created equal. But some are more equal than others." Very interesting.

Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand
Of course this one is really hitting home RIGHT NOW! If you hear people talking about "going Galt" then you know how relevant this book is today!

I know not everyone is political. I know many people would prefer to watch American Idol or some other nice easy TV show and pretend that "The Government" is something that just happens and we have no control over it. This country was built through participation in our government! Our lack of participation (paying attention to what the politicians want to do, voting on record rather than looks or charisma) has brought us to this point. We get the government we deserve I suppose. What isn't fair is that "I" vote based on record and ideas and I am being punished by a bunch of vacuous followers who have not looked into anything prior to voting! This goes beyond party lines and I am not picking on any particular political party. Voting based on political party is ridiculous as well. Our politicians have turned "politician" into a career choice! This was not intended when our country first began. "Serving the country" in politics is exactly what it sounds like. You are voted in, you do your duty for the allotted years, then you GET OUT. Our system was not designed for career politicians who have NEVER held any other previous job. Look at the candidates for ALL positions and see if any of them have had some sort of private sector job. The ones who have at least have some idea of the "outside world."

OK rant over! Read the books and YOU decide where we are as a country! (other than broke)
